Navigating the holidays can be challenging for those in recovery from substance and alcohol use, triggering difficult emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. However, preparing ahead can help individuals maintain their sobriety during the holidays.
Primary Addiction Counselor Amy Gridley, from C.A.R.S.’s upcoming Cortland Opioid Treatment Program, shared helpful insight on how those in recovery can maintain their sobriety during the holiday season through reaching out for support, focusing on self-care, and avoiding what will not be helpful.
Gridley emphasizes, “Use your support system! Reach out to them if you are struggling with the holiday blues." Moreover, self-care also plays a critical role during the holidays. Amy says, “This time of year can be extremely stressful and draining. If you are not taking care of yourself, it will be even harder to get through the stress without using substances you used to rely on. Even when you don’t feel like self-care, do it anyway.” Finally, Gridley adds, "Avoid the people, places, and things that are not going to help you maintain your sobriety."
