FACTS ABOUT OUR
RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM

  • A long-term, six to nine month program that is structured by Phases, Orientation through Phase 4. Each phase is six to twelve weeks.

  • CARS RSU chemical dependency treatment focuses on the brain disease model.  Using research that shows that the limbic system is the central brain area compromised in function during and while first recovering from substance use; we work to educate clients in understanding that recovery is enhanced by learning to avoid extremes of emotion, reactivity, “war stories” and “street behavior.”

  • Twice a week clients are in Matrix-Model groups, “Early Recovery Skills” for Orientation Phase, then Matrix Relapse Prevention for all phases.  These groups are structured by Primary Addiction Counselor caseload, enhancing the Matrix Model focus on beneficial transference.  Two other times a week clients are involved in Matrix “Social Support Group,” by caseload and then by gender.

  • Clients are all involved in classes in Hazelden’s model for Drug & Alcohol Education, Relapse Prevention and Criminal & Addiction Thinking. Other weekly groups include Anger Management, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Stephen Covey), Living a Life that Matters (Harold Kushner), U.S. History: Civics & Citizenship and Creative Writing.

  • Three days each week all clients are involved in Vocational Education classes, including classes in our computer lab. We offer clients GED preparation and the opportunity to take the test as appropriate.

  • Clients qualify for Phase movement through training, testing and clinical team consultation on appropriate behavioral and attitudinal changes, along with class assignments.

  • CARS RSU partners with Cornell Cooperative Extension for groups in Money Management and Cooking & Nutrition.  Cornell Cooperative Extension also provides training for our Life Skills Counselors in Voc/Ed training and group facilitation.  Future trainings will focus on the “Effective Parenting Skills” model of class facilitation.

  • CARS RSU presents the Matrix Model Family Education Group, using videos educating clients and their families in topics such as Triggers & Cravings, Family Recovery and specific substance information.
